Halloween recap and My love/hate relationship with Martha

I love Halloween, but man was it exhausting. This was the first year Marisa could really participate and get in on the fun, so I wanted it to be extra special. Yesterday I spent the morning dreaming up the perfect Halloween night menu for my little family. I had saved last year's recipes from Martha Stewart's Halloween issue, and I thought I would make Sausage and Apple Handpies (that we could take with us to eat while we were trick-or-treating), Pumpkin Harvest soup, brew up some warm apple cider, and make mini caramel and chocolate candied apples. I figured I'd make all these fantastic things during her nap and when she woke up we would all carve pumpkins together as a family and finish just in time to set out our beautifully lit jack-o-lanterns at twilight and get dressed to go trick-or-treating. (Oh - and all the while taking beautiful pictures to share with you...)

Things didn't go quite as planned. I spent Marisa's nap time grocery shopping, and then when I came home I started right away on making the pate brisee dough for the Sausage and Apple hand pies. I had done it last year and remembered how good they tasted and looked. The ingredients were so basic...flour, butter, a little salt, sugar, and water. No problem.

Within no time I was covered in flour and starting to think, "oh crap, what have I gotten myself into!" I failed to remember how much I suck at working with dough. Especially dough that has to be refrigerated over and over again for 15 minutes at a time and then laid out on parchment paper that you don't have. I managed to calm myself and get the dough made and in the fridge to set for an hour. I cut up a sugar pumpkin for the pumpkin soup and threw it in the oven. That would also take about an hour to roast. I cleaned up the flour mess and went outside to carve a pumpkin. Hubby was watching football and showed no interest in carving pumpkins. No biggie, Marisa would help me. This part was actually a little relaxing and fun. Marisa watched wide eyed during each step, but by the time I finished, she was playing on my iphone. There were two more pumpkins left to carve. That was not gonna happen. I went back to making the pies. The filling was easy and quick to make, but I was sweating as I tried to quickly roll out the dough into 1/8 inch thick sheets that were supposed to be rectangles but more resembled ovals. I decided to skip putting the dough back in the fridge as instructed. I was running out of time to get them in the oven. I cut pumpkin shapes and piled on the filling. I decided eight would be enough to put in the oven, the rest I could maybe make as some version of pot pie tomorrow. The pumpkin soup was made today, and forget about the cider and candied apples! In the end, we did make it trick-or-treating and had a great time. That's all that really matters.

This brings me to my love/hate relationship with Martha. I love flipping through the magazine to drool over the food pictures and get design inspiration. I recently saw a snippet of her on Oprah where we got to see inside her home where they were preparing for a dinner party. She had all sorts of "editors" (essentially staff) making arrangements, setting the table, preparing dinner, and cleaning up. I went to her blog today and read about how she loves to decorate for Halloween because it is one of her favorite holidays. And then she posted a picture of the fabulous job her housekeeper did of putting out her Halloween decorations. Must be nice.

Note to self - it takes an army of skilled, talented people to make all these beautiful spreads in the magazines and on tv happen. Next year, I'll plan better and not set such high expectations for myself. We all love to create beautiful memories through food and craft, but it's not worth it if we're too tired at the end of the day to enjoy it with the ones we love!

Hocus Focus (Part 2) - The Details

A good starting point for any party is to come up with a focused theme. For this Halloween Party, I wanted a theme that was kid friendly, but also a little more sophisticated for the adults to enjoy as well. My first thought was, "what sort of backdrop was I going to provide for the portraits?" I knew I didn't want to do the standard bales of hay with fall leaves and orange pumpkins, because you could go to the pumpkin patch and get that picture. I was inspired by the Disney movie "Hocus Pocus" and decided to tie everything in to a witch's house.

Top Left:
The set featured a beautiful green, petite french chair from Found, Vintage Rentals. We surrounded it with bird cages, antique books, and props from Inviting Occasion and my own collection. I wanted muted colors so the childrens' bright costumes could pop out in the pictures. Consider using faded fairytale pumpkins and white pumpkins to decorate your doorstep this year for a more vintage Halloween feeling. I found great prices on these pumpkins at Trader Joe's. Roger's Gardens also has a beautiful displays to give you ideas during Halloween, and pumpkins in ghoulish greens and greys.

Top Middle/Right:
On the buffet table, I used apothecary jars to display "potion ingredients." Three heads of cauliflower floating in water with a few drops of green food coloring became zombie brains, a ball of white tulle served as bottled swamp fog, sand doubled as graveyard dust, and a garland of natural vine with fake flies and bugs throughout looked like twisted tigs.
Bottom Left/Right:For the entrance, I wanted a big impact so we went a little more "glam witch" by using luxurious black feather boas as a backdrop for the candy bar and sign in table. I found the purple glittered hanging chandeliers and candelabras that we hung upside down at Target for just $2.99 each! The candy display featured a handmade spellbook (by Larrissa at Inviting Occasion) and various potion bottles filled with water dyed in various colors. Here's a great money saving tip on the candy bar (especially now that it's Halloween.) Buy the value packs with several different types of candy and separate them out by color. It makes a bigger visual impact to have several different sized containers of candy. It's all about the presentation, so stack them on a cake plate, or line them up neatly on a long rectangular platter. Also, try to create different levels when setting out food. Use cake plates and create "risers" using boxes or even cake pans turned upside down and covering them with cloth.

My last tip for your Halloween decor is to create vignettes when decorating. Instead of trying to fill every single spot in your home, just focus on a few areas and group your decorations together. What will your theme be this year?

***Special thanks to Larrissa of
Inviting Occasion for use of her props, assistance with decor installation and set design, Celeste for the mini spider web cupcakes and acting as greeter, Kat and Ashley - my assistant witches, and Mali Workman Photography, Maria Meier Photography, and Jennifer Shultz Photography for taking additional event photos.

Hocus Focus - Halloween Portrait Party (Part 1)

The Hocus Focus Halloween Portrait Party was a smashing success! Thank you to all who came to celebrate the launch of Jackie Culmer Photography and The Silver Spoon and Paper Plate Blog! Your support means the world to me. Everyone looked fabulous in their costumes and the kids really enjoyed bobbing for apples (or fishing, for the little ones), decorating mini pumpkins with googly eyes and stickers, making Halloween shapes with Play Doh, and stopping at the candy bar to fill up their own treat bags!

For guests of Hocus Focus, check your email this weekend for instructions to view the private event gallery, how to receive your complimentary digital image, and how to order extra pictures. The Halloween Costume contest entries will be posted here on the blog this Saturday, at which time you, your friends, and family can vote for your favorite Halloween portrait by leaving a comment on the blog. More party pictures and details coming soon!

For those who couldn't make it, here's a peek at what you missed:

Never Underestimate the Power of the Cookie Cutter

I walked into Sur La Table yesterday and found out all of their cookie cutters are now on sale for just $0.56! They come in over 150 different shapes and are nice and sharp. Check out their Halloween cutters! For all you overtired mommies out there sifting through countless recipes and special menus for that upcoming party or playdate, RELAX! You don't have to go too fancy. It's all about the presentation. Try using cookie cutters to cut shapes in cheese, sandwiches, or fruits. For adults, cut some puff pastry sheets and layer in your favorite soft cheese and herbs in between.
Here's a simple snack bag I put together last year for our play group's trip to the pumpkin patch:

I used brown paper lunch bags and tied them with Halloween ribbon I found at Michaels for $0.99 a spool. I designed the tags and menu cards and printed them on regular white card stock. The "Muenster Sammies" are apple butter and muenster cheese sandwiches on rye cut into a ghost shape, wrapped in parchment paper, and tied with kitchen twine. I found
this recipe for Pumpkin Spice cookies which were easy to make and DELICIOUS! Lastly, I added one of my daughter's favorite snacks - veggie sticks for some nice color. Et Voila!

Cupcakes are so last year...

Well I've been off to a bit of a slow start here on the blog, but with good reason. I have spent the last week designing tags and table signs for a very special spread in the upcoming January issue of Ceremony Magazine. Yesterday I worked with my talented-super-genius-friend Larrissa Rehder of Inviting Occasion, her incredible team, and Heather of 24 Carrots Catering & Events to help set up for a photo shoot of the latest in dessert buffets - donuts!

Donuts? At a fancy wedding or event? Yes, donuts can be chic and add a whimsical, unexpected touch to your dessert bar. Think beautifully glazed donuts with pearl toppings and sprinkles in your wedding or party colors, warm miniature donuts with shots of espresso to cap off the night, or bite sized donut bon bons (okay, donut holes) filled with gourmet jams or simply powdered in sugar. Though you'll have to wait for the magazine to come out to see our fabulous donut spread, consider making your own special treats for a Halloween get together this year.

Here are a few recipes to get you started:
